Abstract

Introduction: Patellofemoral syndrome, also known as anterior knee pain, is characterized by discomfort in the anterior region of the joint and the area surrounding the patella.

Objectives: To describe and analyze the characteristics of patellofemoral dysfunction using magnetic resonance imaging studies.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, and retrospective study was conducted at the Cuban Hospital of Qatar, aimed at characterizing patellofemoral dysfunction via magnetic resonance imaging. The research included 100 patients treated between April 2022 and April 2025, with a clinical diagnosis of this condition, who had knee MRI images recorded in their medical records.

Results: Young adult patients predominated, with no statistically significant differences between sexes. The presence of changes in the morphological parameters evaluated by MRI showed a significant association with patellofemoral dysfunction, suggesting that these parameters could constitute relevant markers in its clinical and radiological assessment.

Conclusions: High-field magnetic resonance imaging allowed a detailed characterization of the diagnostic parameters linked to patellofemoral dysfunction. However, the findings support that, before making surgical decisions, complementary studies such as computed tomography and conventional radiography should be considered to alternatively evaluate measurements such as trochlear entry, the distance between the anterior tibial tuberosity and the trochlear groove, as well as parameters related to the posterior cruciate ligament.

Keywords: patellofemoral dysfunction; patellofemoral syndrome; magnetic resonance imaging.
