Abstract

Introduction: In-line speed skating lacks comprehensive studies analyzing functional and performance parameters. Furthermore, there is little literature describing factors associated with musculoskeletal injuries and symptoms.

Objective: To determine associations among injury history, prevalence of musculoskeletal pain symptoms, and jumping performance in young skaters.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 200 young skaters (age 12.77 ± 1.19 years). Anthropometric characteristics, injury history, prevalence of pain symptoms, and horizontal (3-hop test) and vertical (Couter Movement Jump-Squat Jump) jumpability were assessed.

Results: 32.50 % of the athletes suffered at least one injury, generally related to traumatic mechanisms (62.37 %) and the lower extremities (68.81 %). The prevalence of pain was 40.50 %, and it was most frequently observed in the knee (37.04 %) and foot (19.75 %). History of injury and pain did not influence vertical jump scores (p-value > 0.05). Significant differences were found in the mean functional asymmetries in the horizontal jump in individuals with pain (p-value < 0.05).

Conclusions: A history of recent injuries and painful symptoms did not influence performance scores in the vertical jump; however, current discomfort increased functional asymmetries, as measured by horizontal jump tests.
