Abstract

Introduction: The modern world has brought a dizzying rate of development, accompanied by increasing highly complex injuries from accidents. These injurers are mostly located in the long bones, where it is common to find fractures with several fragments and great bone exposure. The bone fixation techniques require improvement, to control damage, achieving healing of fractures and avoiding complications and sequelae.

Objectives: To validate the current usefulness of this surgical treatment method and to describe some demographic variables of these patients.

Methods: A prospective longitudinal intervention study was carried out with 20 patients diagnosed with complex long bone fractures, undergoing emergency surgery, and had external linear fixators at Calixto García Iñiguez General Hospital from August 2016 to August 2017.

Results: The group 30 and 39 years old, male, associated with car accidents was the most frequently observed. High-energy and exposed grade 3A and 3B fractures predominated. Complications were few and all cases had good results.

Conclusions: The application of linear external fixators as definitive treatment in complex long bone fractures is a useful and effective method, which causes few complications and allows satisfactory results in acceptable periods.
