Volar Plate Osteosynthesis in Distal Radius Fractures

Abstract

Introduction: Fractures of the distal end of the radius are frequent injuries, especially in women and in older patients with a variety of previous treatments that include the use of the volar plate as the main method of treatment today.

Objective: To communicate the results achieved in cases of distal radius fractures by using a volar plate as an oteosynthesis method.

Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with patients treated at Fructuoso Rodríguez Orthopedic Hospital, who suffered a distal radius fracture. A volar plate was used for therapeutic treatment. The patients were incorporated sequentially and their mean follow-up was 12 months (8 min - 18 max). The inclusion of patients began in February 2017 and ended in February 2019. In February 2020, the clinical follow-up ended.

Results: The mean age of the study was 49 years and the female sex was the most affected, types B and C of the AO classification predominated, complications were few and 87% good results were obtained.

Conclusions: The treatment of distal radius fractures with the use of volar plate provides satisfactory functional results.
