Introduction: Dentists, especially surgeons and periodontists, are susceptible to developing CTS carpal tunnel syndrome and other painful alterations of the hand. The BOSTON questionnaire has been considered a tool to identify symptoms related to carpal tunnel syndrome, but it is not specific to establish its diagnosis.
Objective: To establish the complementary clinical tests to the BOSTON questionnaire for the identification of suspected carpal tunnel syndrome in specialists in periodontics.
Methods: A cross-sectional analytical observational study was carried out with 40 periodontists from Bucaramanga, Colombia. In addition to the BOSTON questionnaire, sociodemographic variables, clinical practice, Tinel, Laban, Phalen clinical tests and Katz diagram were taken into account. The ethical principles of the participants and autonomy were respected with the signing of informed consent.
Results: This study found the relationship between the BOSTON questionnaire and the KATZ diagram test for the diagnosis of suspected carpal tunnel syndrome. The frequency of suspected carpal tunnel syndrome was 27.8%. Most of the symptoms reported by the participants in the BOSTON questionnaire were mild; however, 7.5% of the participants reported severe tingling numbness at night.
Conclusions: The complementary clinical test to the BOSTON questionnaire was the KATZ diagram. The use of these two inexpensive, non-invasive tests can be an inexpensive and simple way to identify a suspected case of carpal tunnel syndrome.
