Introduction: When evaluating thoracolumbar kyphosis due to ankylopoietic spondylitis, the functional impact should be measured to improve the patient’s quality of life and solve the problems of adequate care. Consequently, knowledge is needed to implement a surgical technique and the Oswestry disability scale, an innovative method with qualitative changes for the benefit of patients.
Objective: To evaluate the functional results with the Oswestry scale in the correction of thoracolumbar kyphosis by ankylopoietic spondylitis.
Method: A descriptive, retrospective, longitudinal study was performed on 16 patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis due to ankylopoietic spondylitis, who underwent surgery using the technique of pediatric subtractive osteotomy, in the Orthopedic Service of "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital during the period from March 2001 and March 2021.
Results: A good functional result was obtained and the quality of life of the patients improved.
Conclusions: The Oswestry scale is feasible, easy to administer and score; in addition, it has adequate metric characteristics for the functional evaluation in the correction of thoracolumbar kyphosis by ankylopoietic spondylitis.
