Abstract

Introduction: Congenital knee dislocation has very low incidence (0.017 cases per thousand live births) and 1 per 100,000 cases in relation to hip dysplasia. It can occur in isolation or as part of some teratological entities (Down syndrome, arthrogryposis, myelomeningocele).

Objective: To report a case of congenital knee dislocation that corrected the deformity without surgical intervention.

Case report: A newborn was treated, at Loeri Coumba Regional Hospital in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, due to a 350 hyperextension the right knee (extreme recurvatum), and limitation for flexion. There was any other associated pathology. A Ferri type III congenital knee dislocation was diagnosed. Flexion was reduced. The use of an inguino-pedal cast, with the knee in 90º for six weeks, favorably modified the deformity.

Conclusions: A timely diagnosis and early treatment are associated with a good prognosis. Conservative management promotes effective recovery and avoids skeletal muscle and psychosocial complications.
