Post-Surgical Complications in Scoliosis Surgery
Keywords:

Introduction: Scoliosis is the lateral deviation of the spine. In its surgical correction, the techniques become more aggressive, which has allowed higher degree of correction, but at the same time has increased the possibility of postoperative complications. Low incidence of neurological complications is described in the surgical treatment of scoliosis, although the incidence may currently be somewhat higher. This risk increases in scoliosis of neurological and congenital causes and in very sharp curves. Objective: To identify the main postoperative complications in patients operated on for scoliosis.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out of a series of 100 cases operated on for scoliosis in Cienfuegos province from January 2013 to December 2020.
Results: During the study period, 100 scoliosis surgeries were performed, in which 26 complications were found in 21 patients. Most of the patients were female (96%), the average age was 15.6 years, representing an average curve of 54.8 degrees for the Cobb angle. In the reviewed series, four different surgical techniques were carried out and idiopathic scoliosis was the most frequent. Sublaminar wire rupture was the main complication in this series of cases.
Conclusions: Scoliosis surgery is becoming more frequent and necessary for patients with progressive and high-grade deformities, and surgical techniques are becoming more sophisticated. Likewise, complications are very frequent and severe, so it is necessary to well master the technique to be performed, and individualize each patient to avoid them.
