Gonarthrosis and obesity

Introduction: Gonarthrosis is a degenerative entity, with several modifiable and nonmodifiable factors. Among the former is obesity, which hinders the treatment of patients.
Objective: To update knowledge on patients with gonarthrosis and obesity.
Methods: The search and analysis of the information was carried out in three months. The terms osteoarthritis and obesity, knee osteoarthritis and obesity, obesity and treatment were used. A total of 423 articles were reviewed in the databases PubMed, Hinari, SciELO and Medline, using the EndNote search engine and reference manager.
Results: Patients with gonarthrosis, as well as the interrelation of biomechanical and biochemical elements, were characterized from a clinical point of view. The anatomical relationships of the knee in patients with obesity were described. Hormones acting in these patients and methods of treatment were pointed out.
Conclusions: Obesity associated with gonarthrosis is a poor prognostic factor, in terms of presentation and bilaterality of the disease. Also, it has been recognized as a factor of progression. Therefore, methods for its treatment in this group of patients must be carefully selected. The multidisciplinary team plays a very important role in this regard.
