Arthroscopy-assisted medial plication in pediatric patients with patellofemoral instability

Introduction: Patellofemoral instability affects the knee of adolescent patients relatively frequently. Medial retinaculum plication is one of the arthroscopic surgical treatment modalities.
Objective: To update the indications, contraindications, technical details and results of arthroscopic medial plication.
Methods: The information analysis was carried out in 61 days and the words used were patellofemoral instability AND pediatric, patellofemoral instability and skeletal immature patients, patellofemoral instability AND medial reefing, patellofemoral instability AND medial plication, medial reefing OR medial plication. One hundred fifty-seven articles from PubMed, Hinari, SciELO and Medline databases were reviewed using EndNote search manager and reference manager.
Development: The indications and contraindications of the surgical procedure were reported. The stepwise technique was described and three variants were offered for the medial retinaculum plication. The results of some researchers with this procedure were mentioned.
Conclusions: Arthroscopic medial retinaculum plication is very useful in patients with patellofemoral instability. In addition, it takes into account the characteristics of pediatric patients.
