Autograft with quadricipital versus hamstring tendons for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

Introduction: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is a common procedure to restore anteroposterior and rotational stability of the knee.
Objective: To determine whether there are differences in clinical and functional outcomes reported by patients regarding arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with quadricipital tendon autograft compared to hamstring tendons.
Methods: An analytical observational retrospective cohort study was performed in patients of Hospital Universitario Nacional de Colombia. Univariate, bivariate, multivariate and inferential data analysis by logistic regression was used. The difference between the techniques was determined by the chi-squared and t-student tests. ANOVA and post hoc tests were used for the parametric distribution. The Mann-Whitney test was used for the nonparametric distribution. Statistical significance was p = 0.05.
Results: Of the 108 patients included, 31 % underwent quadriceps tendon autografting and 61 % received hamstring autograft. None of the preoperative variables influenced the outcome or complication rate. Of the intraoperative variables, chondral disease was associated with worse scores on the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scale. Postoperatively, only the time for returning to physical activities and sports differed and was higher in patients treated with hamstring autograft.
Conclusions: Patients treated with quadricipital autograft resumed physical and sports activities faster. With respect to clinical and functional results, time for returning to occupational activities, degree of satisfaction and rate of complications, there were no relevant differences between the techniques.
