Introduction: Discoid meniscus presents with pain and protrusion in the knee joint. To confirm the diagnosis, imaging tests are very useful, while treatment is performed arthroscopically.
Objectives: To update and provide information on patients with discoid meniscus.
Methods: The search and analysis of the information was carried out during 61 days. The terms pediatric meniscus pathology, discoid meniscus and snapping knee syndrome were used. A total of 187 articles were reviewed in the PubMed, Hinari, SciELO and Medline databases, using the EndNote search engine and reference manager.
Development: Reference is made to the clinical and imaging picture from plain radiography to magnetic resonance imaging; in each case, the specific characteristics of this joint-related condition are shown. Postoperative care and prognostic factors to consider in this group of patients are mentioned.
Conclusions: Discoid meniscus is a condition that predisposes to rupture of this structure due to its histological characteristics and geometric shape. The diagnosis is based on three fundamental cornerstones: clinical, imaging and arthroscopic. The latter allows a dynamic evaluation of stability and the application of various procedures, such as partial meniscectomy.
