Cellular regeneration in segmental bone defects
Keywords:
segmental bone defects, stem cells, regenerative medicineAbstract
Introduction: Segmental bone defects are caused by high-energy trauma. They cause acute bone loss, they occur subacutely during surgical debridement of an open fracture, and they can be seen in chronic cases of pseudoarthrosis and osteomyelitis.
Objective: To evaluate the use of the membrane induction technique, combined with cell therapy, in segmental bone defects.
Case report: Patient with a segmental bone defect secondary to hypertrophic pseudoarthrosis of the right humerus measuring 6.3 cm, treated with the membrane induction technique (Masquelet), which was combined with the implantation of autologous adult stem cells in the second surgical procedure. Bone consolidation was achieved after 12 weeks.
Conclusions: Surgical treatment of segmental bone defects with the membrane induction technique, combined with cell therapy, was successful.
